The history of northern British Columbia is very strongly influenced by railroading. The Grand Trunk Pacific and CN played a critical role in the development of Prince George, Prince Rupert and points between. The long tangled story of the Pacific Great Eastern, BCRail, and eventually CN is an epic saga of political and economic tragedy and intrigue.

The fictional Great Western Trunk & Pacific explores an alternate history by adding more industrial competition and an additional (more coastal) north/south route through the province, thus opening up otherwise still unpopulated areas of the province between Squamish and Prince Rupert. It also provides opportunities for connections into southern routes such as Canadian Pacific & BNSF and opens a coastal pacific route to the underutilized norther ports such as Prince Rupert (and other fictional ports along the way).
